How to Create a Turtle Habitat

Turtles are popular pets for adults and children of all ages, and while it may seem that the care of turtles is relatively easy, it's not that simple. Even though these cold-blooded reptiles have survived on our planet for millions of years, they still require certain conditions and a specific diet in order to maintain their health. When choosing to keep a turtle as a pet, taking the time to set up a proper turtle habitat is important. Without the proper balance in its environment, this reptile will fail to thrive.

Instructions

    • 1

Acquire a long, low aquarium that is the appropriate size, with a lid that contains large air holes. A single turtle that has a shell length of 8 inches will need at least a 20 gallon aquarium. Adult turtles will need larger tanks. For every additional turtle you plan to house, you will need at least an additional 10 gallons of space.

    • 2

Fill the tank with enough water so that the turtle can be completely submerged to swim, and install a filter to help keep the water clean.

    • 3

Create a land area for the turtle that is easily accessible to it when exiting the water. Slate and rocks can be built up above the water line to provide a dry area of varying levels for the turtle to climb upon and bask. A large piece of driftwood can also be used.

    • 4

Install a full-spectrum fluorescent light as the main lighting source. A combination of UVA and UVB lighting is best. Install a timer to simulate natural light and dark cycles.

    • 5

Install a 60 watt basking lamp over the basking area, and a submersible tank heater to control the temperature in the habitat. Use a thermometer to monitor the temperature. Water temperature should be around 78 degrees Fahrenheit, while the basking area temperature should hover around 82 degrees Fahrenheit.

    • 6

Include real or artificial landscaping plants in the habitat, if desired. Ensure that any plants you place in the environment are non-toxic to turtles. Anchor the plants in sand or gravel.
