Physical Characteristics
-
Red ear sliders characteristically have a red or yellowish-orange stripe starting near their eyes and extending back to cover their ears. The top shell of the adult red ear slider is yellow or olive green in color with a distinct pattern of dark lines or patches.
Size
-
Adult red ear sliders average 7 to 12 inches in length. Males range from 7 to 9 inches, while females are much larger ranging 10 to 12 inches.
Temperament
-
Like any animal, if a red ear slider feels threatened, it is likely to bite, but if it is handled gently and taken care of properly, the turtles will generally be very friendly and eager to greet you at feeding time.
Diet
-
Young red ear sliders must be fed daily, while older turtles can be fed every other day. Their diet should include a combination of proteins and fresh plants. Vitamin supplements can also be added to ensure proper nutritional needs are met.
Environment
-
Red ear sliders in captivity require a large aquarium that allows them a source of freshwater for drinking and swimming, and a dry land source for basking in the sun or under a warm light.
