How to Stop the Waterfall Noise in a Turtle Tank

Although some people like the sound of waterfalls lulling them to sleep, others do not. Sometimes, the constant noise of water running from a waterfall in your turtle's tank ends up being more irritating than soothing. Thankfully, there are simple, inexpensive methods to silence this noise that take no time at all.

Keep the water level in the turtle tank at the bottom of the filter's return. Every time you start to hear the waterfall noise, pour more water into the tank. As long as you keep the water at this level, the tank will be silent. In 10-gallon tanks, the water usually needs to be topped off at least once a week.

Secure a sponge to the outfall of the back of the filter. Use plastic cable ties purchased at a hardware store. (Wash them off first.) This keeps the water circulating through the sponge slowly, so it doesn't create a running water noise. You will need to clean out this sponge once or twice each week.

Adjust the bio-wheel filter, if you have one. If you do, there is a little knob on the side. Adjust the knob so the water spray is directed down into the water (or upward if that helps the noise at all instead). This will help adjust the noise level of the waterfall considerably. Experiment with it a little to see what works best for you.

Purchase a silence or noise-stop tank lid at a pet or reptile store. These can help reduce the noise of the waterfall inside the turtle tank without changing anything within the tank. Unfortunately, these can be hard to find and expensive.
