Rinse out the tub you will be using and put in enough that will come up to half of the length of the turtle’s leg. This will ensure that your turtle will not be struggling to stay above water. Allow the water to sit for 30 minutes. In the winter make sure the water is not cold to the touch, otherwise your turtle will be uncomfortable.
Pick up the turtle with both hands, one placed on each side of the shell, and gently place it into the tub. Do not squeeze the turtle shell as it will cause the turtle pain. If your turtle is large, ask a friend for help in lifting it.
Fill the small plastic cup with water and begin to pour the water over your pet turtle. When you encounter areas with dirt, use your hand to rub the dirt away with the water. Turtles can feel through their shells, and rubbing should be kept to a minimum. Slide your hand to the underside of the turtle's belly and rub the bottom of their shell to loosen any dirt or debris. Do not turn the turtle over at any point during the bath.
Lift the turtle out of the tub and onto the dry bath towel. Pat the turtle dry all over, and place the turtle in a warm, dry, sunny place. Give the turtle its favorite treat such as insects or vegetables and allow it to warm itself.
Wash your hands with warm water and antibacterial soap to prevent the spread of illness or disease from your pet to you. Use antibacterial cleaner to thoroughly clean the tub you used to wash your turtle.
