How to Lower the pH in a Turtle Tank

Clean and properly balanced water is essential for keeping a turtle happy and healthy. Turtles spend large portions of time in the water, which unfortunately for their owners, means that constant diligence is required for maintaining proper pH levels and preventing cloudy water and bacteria from developing. PH testing strips can be purchased from most pet supply stores and can be a useful tool if you are unsure whether the pH level of your turtle tank is healthy or not.

Place a piece of bog wood in your turtle tank. Bog wood is one of the most natural solutions for lowering the pH level in your tank. Simply place your piece of bog wood into the water of your tank. Bog wood can sometimes stain your water a brownish color, however, if you have a carbon filter, this usually removes any stained appearance.

Gently squeeze a peat ball, using your hands, in the water of the tank. Peat balls are a cheap and efficient method of lowering the pH level in your tank. You can leave your peat ball inside the tank and reuse it for several months.

Place one alder cone, per gallon of water, into your turtle tank. This is another simple, natural method of bringing the pH level in your tank down. Another easy, organic method is placing an almond leaf in your tank.
