How to Get Rid of Hard Water Stains on a Turtle Tank

Hard water contains minerals such as magnesium and calcium. The dissolved minerals build up on turtle tanks and aquariums, forming deposits or stains on the walls and making the tank look dirty. If not removed regularly, the deposits continue to grow. Although the deposits do not harm the turtle, they make it difficult to see inside the tank. There are a few non-toxic ways to remove hard water stains from turtle tanks.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the turtle from the tank and place it somewhere safe.

    • 2

Pour vinegar onto a cloth and scrub at the hard water stains. Vinegar has ascetic acid that helps to break down the deposits. Another option is to use lemon juice to scrub off the deposits.

    • 3

Use an aquarium scrubber to scrub away the hard water stains. Use force to break up the hardened deposits.

    • 4

Use a razor to cut through the hardened water stains. Be very careful when using the sharp razor so as not to hurt yourself.

    • 5

Rinse out the turtle tank to remove all traces of the hard water stains. Wet paper towels to wipe off the tank walls and pick up chunks of deposits you removed with the razor or scrubber.
