Live Feed
-
Grasshoppers, crickets and any other insects are favorites of the Reeve's turtle. This is what they would eat in the wild. Other options are small worms, fish and frogs. Live bait will not only meet their nutritional requirements but hunting prey will also keep them entertained and active.
Vegetation
-
Aquatic plants not only provide feed for your turtle, but they also provide oxygen while lowering nitrate levels in the tank. Arrowhead, hair grass, java moss, java fern, water trumpets, water lettuce and Canadian pond weed are a few edible options. Turtles also enjoy swimming and hiding in water plants.
Prepared Feed
-
Raw liver and steak or cooked chicken are suitable for your turtle. Lettuce, pears and cantaloupe are also good. Prepared turtle food or pellets can be purchased from pet stores. Avoid giving your turtle any boxed treats for turtles, or pellets that contain artificial coloring.
Feeding
-
The Reeve's turtle can be very messy when eating. It shreds and tears meals excessively. This can cause a dirty tank and require additional cleaning. Feed your turtle in another tank if possible.
