How to Set up a Terrapin Tank

If you have decided to keep a pet terrapin, it is important to properly create an adequate living space for your pet. Terrapin are cold-blooded reptiles, meaning their internal temperature varies with their environment, so the proper environment is vital to their survival. Every species of terrapin has specific needs, so research the type of turtle you have, and tailor its tank to its specific needs.

  • Land area (wood or rocks)

Instructions

    • 1

Acquire a suitable tank for your terrapin. Depending on the species of terrapin, a tank between 20 and 40 gallons is appropriate.

    • 2

Find a location in the home for your tank. The temperature in the tank will be regulated, so a location in the home with a stable temperature, free from drafts and away from direct sunlight is ideal.

    • 3

Build the land mass in the tank. Using rocks or wood, set up a platform where the turtle can bask. Be sure this area is large enough that the terrapin can fully remove itself from the water.

    • 4

Fill the tank with water. The water level should be high enough so the terrapin can easily reach its land mass, but not so high as to cover the land area. There should be adequate space for the terrapin to swim (6 to 12 inches, depending on the size of the pet). The land mass may need to be adjusted after filling the tank to ensure it is above the water line.

    • 5

Set up an appropriately sized water filtration system according to the system's instructions.

    • 6

Install a submersible heater. These heaters typically have suction cups attached, allowing them to be affixed to a side of the tank.

    • 7

Affix the basking lamp. These typically have clamps to easily attach to the top of the tank. Aim the lamp so it points on the terrapin's land area.

    • 8

Allow the water to reach the proper temperature, 70-80 degrees Fahrenheit.

    • 9

Introduce your terrapin to its new home.

    • 10

Place the screen lid atop the terrapin tank.
