How Do I Feed My Turtle With a Syringe?

If you have taken your sick turtle to the vet and were instructed that you need to help feed it as you nurse it back to health, you might not be familiar with using a syringe to provide nutrition to the animal. Turtles, like all living creatures, sometimes get ill or hurt and need some help eating as they recuperate. Use a syringe to help it get food into its mouth, such as when it is very weak, or is injured or otherwise cannot move to get to its food.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the syringe into a container of food and pull the syringe's handle up to draw food into it. Place the loaded syringe on a table so it is in reach when you pick up your turtle.

    • 2

Pick up your turtle and place it on the table.

    • 3

Grasp it behind the jaw and ear flaps using your left hand's thumb and second finger.

    • 4

Use your thumb and the first finger of your right hand to force down the turtle's lower jaw, and keep it open by pressing with the thumb and second finger of your left hand.

    • 5

Hold the syringe above your turtle's tongue and push down on the syringe to deliver food to your turtle, pushing a small amount on the tongue. Do not force the syringe down your turtle's throat. Wait for the turtle to swallow the food you provide before pushing out more food onto the tongue with the syringe.
