Can a turtle make dog sick?

Turtles and their saliva can carry the Salmonella bacteria, which can cause salmonellosis, a type of food poisoning. Dogs are susceptible to salmonella infection, and contact with turtles or their habitats can put dogs at risk. Dogs can become infected with Salmonella by coming into contact with turtles, their feces, or their water, and developing salmonellosis.

Symptoms: lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever, dehydration.

Preventing infection: avoid contact with turtles, wash hands after contact with turtles or their environment, keep turtles out of areas where dogs can access, don't let dogs drink from open water sources where turtles may be present.

If a dog displays symptoms of salmonellosis, consult a veterinarian.
