When do dolphins reach maturity?

Dolphins' ages of maturity can vary across different species, but generally, they are considered reproductively mature when they attain a certain size and age:

1. Bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops truncatus)

- Females: Can reach sexual maturity between 5 to 12 years old.

- Males: Become sexually mature around 10 to 13 years old.

2. Spinner Dolphin (Stenella longirostris)

- Females: Reproductive maturity is reached between 5 to 7 years old.

- Males: Attain sexual maturity at approximately 7 to 9 years old.

3. Common Dolphin (Delphinus delphis)

- Females: Sexual maturity is achieved around 5 to 6 years old.

- Males: Reach maturity at an age of roughly 7 to 9 years.

4. Risso's Dolphin (Grampus griseus)

- Females: Reproductive maturity occurs at approximately 10 years old.

- Males: Become sexually mature around 10 to 12 years old.

5. Orca (Orcinus orca)

- Females: Sexual maturity is attained between 10 to 15 years old.

- Males: Reach maturity around 15 to 20 years old.

It's worth noting that in addition to physical maturity, social maturity also plays a role in reproductive success among dolphins. Some dolphin societies may have established social hierarchies or specific mating behaviors that influence reproduction and access to mates.
