How to Care for Tri-Colored Scorpions

At an impressive 5 inches long and with chunky, strong-looking bodies, tri-color burrowing scorpions (Ophistothalmus walberghi) might look like fearsome creatures. In fact, these scorpions are not exceptionally toxic, although they sting readily. Their needs are relatively simple. Tri-color scorpions need a suitable tank with plenty of hiding places and an abundant supply of crickets. Because of their lifespan and because scorpions are not a hands-on pet, tri-color scorpions are not a suitable pet for children. Adults with an enthusiasm for arthropods, however, may find them fascinating creatures to keep.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a suitable habitat for the scorpion. Add 3 to 4 inches of chemical-free potting compost to the tank. Large pieces of bark or a clay plant pot provide hiding places.

    • 2

Position the heat mat under the tank. These scorpions do best at a temperature of about 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Having the heat mat at one end of the tank provides a choice of temperatures for the scorpion so it can regulate its own temperature.

    • 3

Add about an inch of water to the dish. Tri-color scorpions sometimes like to drink.

    • 4

Put on work gloves before transferring the scorpion to the tank and before opening the tank for any purpose in the future. Although the sting of this species is more painful than dangerous, there is always the possibility of an allergic reaction.

    • 5

Maintain a humidity level of about 70 percent. Mist the tank as required to raise the humidity.

    • 6

Feed the scorpion crickets or other large insects, such as cockroaches, a couple of times a week.

    • 7

Change the water in the dish daily to prevent bacteria proliferating.

    • 8

Clean the tank out completely two to three times a year. Dispose of the old substrate and wipe the tank with hot water and dishwashing liquid. Rinse and dry thoroughly before adding new substrate and replacing the scorpion and accessories.
