Things You'll Need
- Pen or an object with a long stem
Instructions
Gauge the mood of the scorpion by prodding it gently with a pen or something with a long stem. If the scorpion immediately goes into a defensive stance, give up and try again later. Handling an agitated scorpion is ill-advised. When a scorpion goes into a defensive stance it will turn to face its attacker, open its claws and curl its tail over its body.
Hold your hand approximately five inches in front of your scorpion while you prod it gently from behind with a pen. Herd the scorpion into your hand using the pen as a guide.
Elevate your hand with the scorpion in it. Keep the palm of your hand underneath the scorpion. If the scorpion begins to walk, be ready with your other hand to allow the scorpion to switch from one hand to the other. Make sure your movements are slow and steady. Scorpions have a good sense of their environment and will respond to perceived threats.
Avoid picking up the scorpion by its tail. It frightens the animal and provides an easy target for the stinger. However, there is a recommended method of grabbing a scorpion by its tail. Ready your thumb and index finger a few inches away from the tail.
In one swift movement, grab the scorpion by the section of its tail right behind its stinger. Lift the scorpion up and deposit it into your hand. Do not dangle a scorpion by its tail for a long period of time.
