Who discovered mammoths?

Mammoths have been known since ancient times, but their scientific discovery is often attributed to the German naturalist Johann Friedrich Blumenbach in 1806. Blumenbach based his work on the study of a well-preserved mammoth specimen that had been found in Siberia in 1799. He described and classified the mammoth as a distinct genus, and this laid the foundation for further scientific research on mammoths and other extinct species.
