* Nursing: The mother narwhal nurses her calf for about a year and a half.
* Protection: The mother protects her calf from predators like polar bears and orcas.
* Teaching: She also teaches her calf essential survival skills, like how to find food and navigate the icy waters.
Male narwhals do not play a role in raising the young. They generally only interact with females during the breeding season.
