When a narwhal breeds who takes care of the infant?

Narwhals are maternal caregivers. This means that the mother narwhal is solely responsible for raising and caring for the calf.

Here's what that looks like:

* Giving birth: Narwhals give birth to a single calf in the spring, usually in the Arctic waters where they spend their summers.

* Nursing: The mother narwhal nurses her calf for about a year and a half.

* Protection: The mother protects her calf from predators like polar bears and orcas.

* Teaching: She also teaches her calf essential survival skills, like how to find food and navigate the icy waters.

Male narwhals do not play a role in raising the young. They generally only interact with females during the breeding season.
