How to Stop My Baby Ferret From Biting

Biting is a natural behavior for ferrets, but they can be trained not to bite using a number of different techniques. Practicing these techniques while your ferret is still a baby will make training more effective. Ferrets will bite one another during play, when they want attention, while exploring new objects and when they are frightened. Young ferrets will also bite if they are hungry and have not yet discovered the difference between food and people's fingers.

Stop your baby ferret from biting you while you play with it by purchasing a Bitter Apple spray online or from your local pet store. Spray the Bitter Apple scent onto your hands before playing with your baby ferret to discourage him from mouthing your hands and fingers.

Teach your baby ferret that biting you when it wants attention is not acceptable. Say "no" in a firm tone and immediately place the ferret back in its cage for several minutes as a punishment. Avoid cuddling your baby ferret until it has learned not to bite you when you pick it up. Be consistent with the training as it can take lots of repetition before your ferret stops biting.

Help your baby ferret feel safe and secure in its environment to prevent it from biting out of fear. Avoid making sudden movements or loud noises around your ferret as this could cause it to panic and lash out, especially when it is still a baby. Avoid handling your baby ferret if it is exhibiting signs of fear such as hissing, an open mouth and hunched back. In the case of an emergency, for example if the ferret has escaped into the outdoors, throw a coat over it or use thick gloves to pick it up.
