Instructions
Feed your hedgehog early in the morning each day. It's important that your hedgehog be placed on a regular schedule so its circadian rhythms can adjust to a diurnal schedule. Set an alarm to remind yourself to feed your hedgehog at the same time each day. Hedgehogs who eat in the morning are more likely to stay awake throughout the day.
Play with your hedgehog during the day. If your hedgehog gets sufficient exercise and socialization during daylight hours, it's more likely to adjust to a diurnal schedule.
Maintain a consistent lighting schedule with your hedgehog. Turn the lights off in its room before you go to bed and turn the lights on in the morning when you wake up.
Wake your hedgehog up for play time during the day if it's sleeping for more than a few minutes during the day. Your hedgehog will eventually learn that nighttime is for sleeping.
How to Convert Hedgehog to Diurnal
Hedgehogs can make wonderful pets and are frequently affectionate with their owners. Many hedgehogs, however, tend to be most active during the nighttime hours. A diurnal animal is an animal who is active mostly during the day with a few periods of waking during the night. Converting a hedgehog to diurnal habits is relatively easy and can make it easier for hedgehog owners to play with their pets. In order to change a hedgehog's habits, its circadian rhythms, which regulate sleeping and eating, must gradually be adjusted.
