How to Keep Crabs Alive Without a Heated Mat

Although hermit crabs take little space to house, they do have specific environmental needs. For example, the Hermit Crab Association reports that hermit crabs need humidity levels between 70 and 80 percent and temperatures in the range of 75 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit at all times. Keeping the crab for too long in lower or higher temperatures may kill the hermit crab. You have a couple of options for maintaining the temperature of your hermit crab's habitat without the use of a heated mat.

Instructions

    • 1

Attach a thermometer to the inside of the hermit crab's tank near the lid. You can purchase a thermometer of this type at any pet retailer that sells reptile supplies.

    • 2

Place a lamp over your hermit crab's tank. For most tanks you will only need to use a 25-watt bulb. Monitor the temperature throughout the day.

    • 3

Heat the room with a portable heater if the lamp does not keep the tank warm enough or a lamp is not an option for your setup. Again, monitor the temperature at different times during the day and night and adjust the heater as needed.
