Prevention is Key
-
Even if your bunnies never leave the house, fleas can come into the home if you have dogs or cats that play outside. Make sure to check your other pets for fleas regularly. Fleas also thrive in dirty areas. Clean your bunny cage on a regular schedule. Maintenance of your overall house is important as well. Thick dust, crumbs on the carpet and piles of clutter can give fleas plenty of places to hide.
Signs of Fleas
-
If you notice your bunny scratching a lot, it may mean that your pet has fleas. Examine your pet closely. Make sure to look behind the bunny's ears, neck and near the feet. Fleas can also be found near your bunny's eyes. In addition to live fleas, you should be on the lookout for flea eggs. Once you are sure that your pet has fleas, it is time to come up with a plan to rid the animal of these pests. If you are unsure if your bunny has fleas, make an appointment with your vet.
Getting Rid of Fleas
-
One common solution for getting rid of bunny fleas is to make a homemade mixture of warm water, baby shampoo and rubbing alcohol. Brush your solution through your bunny's fur with a pet comb. After each brush stroke, place the comb in a separate cup of water to get rid of the fleas. If you try this method and your animal still seems to be infested, you should contact your vet so that he can prescribe a prescription flea solution that you can use. Do not buy pet store flea powders and products. Although many of these products are safe for dogs and cats, most of them are too strong for bunnies.
The Cage
-
Remember not to put your clean bunny back into a potentially flea-infested cage. Dump all bedding, food and treats into a garbage bag and throw it out in an outdoor trash can. Before putting fresh bedding into the cage, clean it thoroughly with hot water and soap. Doing this will help to get rid of any extra eggs that have previously been laid in the cage. Once the cage is nice and dry, add in clean bedding and your pet can enjoy a comfy home again.

Bunnies With Fleas
Bunnies can be a great pet for kids and adults alike. It is best to adopt two bunnies at the same time so that your bunnies can bond. If you are a new bunny owner, it is important to be informed about your pet's health. Fleas are one problem that bunny owners need to be on the lookout for.
