How to Keep a Cardboard Box Warm

Small animals are commonly housed in cardboard boxes when transported to the vet, or when found in the wild and being temporarily cared for. Some animals are accustomed to warm conditions, and others may need to keep their body temperature up because of illness. During the winter, pets kept in boxes may require help staying warm because the ambient environment is chilly. With a few minutes of preparation, a cardboard box can be turned into a toasty home for a small critter.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a water bottle with very hot water. Close the top and test it to make sure it is sealed properly.

    • 2

Wrap the water bottle in a small blanket.

    • 3

Place the water bottle at the bottom of a paper grocery bag or a large canvas bag. Fluff the blanket so it creates a relatively flat surface on which to set the box.

    • 4

Line the bottom of a cardboard box with a second blanket. Your pet will be resting on this blanket, so you may want to use an old shirt or sweater instead.

    • 5

Put your pet inside the box and set it in the bag on top of the water bottle and blanket. Leave the top of the bag open so air is able to circulate freely. The water bottle will warm the bottom of the box and the bag will help to retain the heat.
