Diet of a Superworm

Superworms, small creatures that are used to feed reptiles, eat a number of foods in order to stay healthy. The worms also require special living conditions, such as a warm environment, to thrive, and can grow considerably large with the right types of food.
  1. Grains

    • The superworm requires a diet filled with grains and fiber, especially wheat bran. The worms will also eat oats, as well as gutload (pet food with a high fiber content).

    Vegetables

    • It is also safe to feed the superworm vegetables like potatoes and carrots, as the animal will burrow into these food items and extract the moisture. Other vegetables, like cabbage or lettuce, can be given to superworms as well.

    Fruits

    • Superworms can be fed a variety of fruits that provide lots of moisture, like peaches or grapes. The worm's living conditions have to be fairly moist for survival. However, too much moisture could result in mites and bacterial growth.

    Paper and Plastic

    • While it is not recommended for feeding superworms, the animals will eat paper that is placed in their nesting area, even if the paper isn't wet. It's also best to use quality plastic containers--if the plastic is too thin, the superworms will eat their way out of the container.

    Cannibalism

    • Even though the living area for the superworms can't contain an excess amount of moisture, it can't be too dry either. If the nesting area doesn't have enough water, or enough food items that the superworm can receive moisture from, the worms will begin to eat one another.
