How to Build a Conure Bird Cage

Conures are a species of pet birds whose origin is Central and South America. There are several varieties of conures with different colors. What they have in common is their intelligence and tendency to move around, which makes it important that they be housed in a strong cage to prevent them from damaging it or frying away. Conure cages can be kept outside or inside the house. What is important is to protect the conure from the elements and predators

Instructions

  1. CONSTRUCT THE FRAME

    • 1

Construct a square frame 2 feet long, 2 feet wide and 2 feet high using 2 by 4 wood pieces attached with 2.25 inch nails.

    • 2

Cut off a 2 feet by 2 feet plywood piece. Attach it to one end of the frame with 2 cupboard hinges. Attach the latch lock. That will become the door of the cage.

    • 3

Attach a 19 inch gauge wire mesh around the cage except where the door is. The holes in the mesh should be tiny, ideally 1.25 cm by 0.62 cm. Secure the wire mesh with steel bars on the sides spaced half an inch apart. This spacing will ensure the conure's head is not trapped between the bars while trying to stick it out of the cage.

    • 4

Put a steel bar piece near the top of the cage where the conure can perch. Conures love perching and the cage should provide as natural an environment as possible.

    • 5

Cut a plywood piece 2 feet square and put it on the top to protect the conure from the elements. Attach it firmly with 2.25 inch nails. On this roof, attach a handle using 2.25 inch nails. The handle is important when you want to move the cage from place to place.

    • 6

On the floor, put a wire mesh so that the conure's feaces drop down and it stays in a clean environment. This mesh will also prevent it from eating its own leftover food. Attach a pullout tray below the floor wire mesh where the feases and left over food will drop. This will make it easy to ensure cleanliness for the cage.

    • 7

Attach legs to the cage using 2 feet 2x4 wood pieces on all corners. This will raise the cage to protect the conure from predators such as insects and snakes. It will also ensure that ground water does not get into the cage when it rains.
