How to Make a Sugar Glider Pouch

Sugar gliders are small, quiet marsupials that love to cuddle and feel secure. These Australian natives, once considered exotic pets, have found their way into the mainstream pet trade. In their natural environment, sugar gliders nest in hollow trees that keep them safe from predators. You can replicate this feeling of safety for your sugar glider by making a simple pouch for it to sleep in.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay your felt squares on top of each other on your work surface. Place one square on the table and lay the other on top with the right sides facing out. The right side of your felt will be slightly fluffier than the opposite side.

    • 2

Cut 1/4-inch wide strips of fringe along three sides of your felt. The strips should be approximately 3 inches long. As you work your way down one side, around the bottom of the felt and up the remaining side, you will remove a small square of fabric from the corners of your felt. You can either dispose of these remnants or give them to your gliders to play with.

    • 3

Tie each pair of fringe strips together with two knots to secure the top piece of felt to the bottom piece. Start your knots in the bottom of your felt pieces and work your way around to the top of each side, leaving the last two strips at the top on each side untied.

Slide one eye hook onto the last strips of fringe on the left side and tie a double knot over the hook. Repeat this process with the remaining hook on the right side. This will allow you to clip the pouch inside the cage and prevent it from falling down while your glider is inside.
