Reptile Allergies

Reptiles are a nontraditional type of pet. Some owners may prefer them as they do not require the maintenance of cats and dogs. However, there is a chance that you may experience new or recurring allergies from your reptile.
  1. Cause

    • Allergies to reptiles manifest in the form of skin irritation. This is linked to the proteins on a reptile's skin, explains anapsid.org.

    Skin Allergies

    • Skin allergies to reptiles come in the form of dermatitis, or skin inflammation. The condition is worsened when you constantly itch or rub the affected area. Reptile allergies can also irritate your lungs and nasal passages.

    Other Symptoms

    • Symptoms of reptile allergies may include rash, hives, wheezing and breathing difficulties.

    Prevention/Solution

    • See an allergist for a topical or oral antihistamine to help relieve reptile allergies. If this does not work to combat severe allergies, you may consider giving your pet to a friend.

    Considerations

    • Although some people may experience symptoms, allergies to reptiles are uncommon. In fact, according to Reptiles Down Under, most people are not as prone to reptile allergies as they are to other kinds of pets, due to a lack of fur and dander.
