How to Make Sugar Glider Toys

Sugar gliders are tree dwellers. They like to feel safe inside of pouches and they love toys that swing. Making toys for sugar gliders is not difficult and it can be accomplished with a few household items and perhaps a trip to the fabric store. The size of the toys should depend on the size of the cage if they are to be used in the cage---or these can be used for out-of-the-cage entertainment.

Instructions

  1. Make a Pouch and a Swing

    • 1

Cut two squares, each measuring 7 inches, from the polar fleece. Lay one square down, wrong side up.

Place cording along one side allow it to loop around to the outside of the square and then down the other side. It should look like a purse with a handle.

Pin the cording 1/4 inch in from the edges.

Place the second square on top of the first one, right side up. Pin three sides together: the two sides with the cording and the bottom.

    • 2

Assemble the pouch with a sewing machine. Using matching thread, stitch over the cording, using a zig-zag stitch. Then sew the bottom using a straight stitch. Repeat this step to ensure a good seam. Finish the edges with pinking shears.

Attach Velcro to each side of the top with pins. Top stitch in place making sure there are no loose edges. The pouch can be hung from the cage using a loose leaf binder ring. This pouch can be worn around the neck as a sugar glider carrier.

Make a swing using plastic chain and a Frisbee. Measure for three holes to drill in the Frisbee. The holes should be equal distance from each other. Drill holes into the side of the Frisbee, just under the rim.

Cut the plastic chain into four equal pieces, 13.5 inches each. Using the loose leaf rings, attach three pieces of chain to the Frisbee at the holes you've just drilled. Attach the fourth piece of chain to the top of the other three chains using one of the loose leaf rings. Place the last ring at the very top of the chain. The chains may need to be adjusted to accommodate the size of the cage.

Cut a circle out of the faux sheepskin so that it will fit inside the Frisbee. Finish the ends of the circle with pinking shears. Place inside the Frisbee.

Hang the swing inside cage or from a hook in the ceiling. You can attach Velcro to the sheepskin to keep it from slipping.
