How to Build a Pet Casket

Losing a pet is an awful experience that can sometimes rival the feelings of losing a human family member. Everyone grieves this loss in their own ways, but most don't want to think about how to deal with the remains. There simply isn't an industry set up to deal with deceased pets as there is with people. It is largely left up to the pet owner to take care of putting their pet to rest. Building a casket for a pet is something that no one ever wants to have to do, but it is sometimes unavoidable.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the deceased pet, either with a tape measure or by sight. It is usually possible to simply estimate the size of casket you will need for your pet. This is often preferable as most people do not wish to measure their parted pet.

    • 2

Look for a suitable object around your house that could be easily turned into a makeshift casket. It will, of course, have to be something you are willing to part with, but this is often a better option than building something. For smaller pets, a 2 liter bottle can be used. Simply cut it in half, wrap the deceased in gauze or paper toweling, place the remains inside and tape the bottle back together.

    • 3

If you need to build one out of wood, cut 2 x 4 pieces to fit the measurements you have taken. Make sure you have enough for the bottom of the casket, the sides and the top.

    • 4

Glue together the pieces of 2 x 4 that you have cut with wood glue. Glue the pieces that make up the bottom and the sides, leaving the top undone for now. Make sure the seal is tight. You can reinforce with nails if you desire.

    • 5

Place the deceased animal into the casket.

    • 6

Glue the top together and glue or nail it onto the rest of your casket. Proceed with burying the pet casket.
