Handmade Hedgehog Cage

Finding appropriate housing for your pet hedgehog can be difficult. Hedgehogs require at least two and a half square feet of floor space to be healthy and happy. Wire cages can trap a hedgehog's feet or head in the gaps, leading to stress or injury, and other cages may not be large enough for a hedgehog. A large handmade cage that is properly ventilated with plenty of space can be completed in an afternoon using two clear plastic storage tubs; your pet will enjoy going from one tub to the other using the passageway you create.

Instructions

    • 1

Mark two to three inches from the edge on the lid on each side. Using the Dremel tool or utility knife, cut the plastic out of the lid. Repeat for the second lid.

    • 2

Cut the hardware cloth (or screen) using the wire cutters. The hardware cloth should be about an inch larger on all sides than the opening cut in the lid. Hardware cloth can be found in most home improvement stores.

    • 3

Attach the screen to the lid. Hot glue the hardware cloth to the top of the lid. Glue each corner down and cover each side with one or two beads of hot glue.

    • 4

Mark on the side of the tubs where to cut the hole for the PVC pipe about three inches from the bottom. The holes should be at the same height on both tubs. Cut the holes so that the PVC pipe fits snugly. If there is some space around the holes, seal them with hot glue or duct tape on the outside of the tub.

    • 5

Drill holes in the side of the tub to attach a water bottle or other accessories, if desired.

    • 6

Clean out any plastic that may have fallen into the tubs while cutting holes. Add bedding, dishes and toys to the cage. Place the cage in a nondrafty area where the temperature is above 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
