How to Make Hermit Crab Pools

Their laid-back, low-maintenance demeanor make hermit crabs the ideal pet for children and adults alike. Hermit crabs are primarily land creatures, but they do require a small pool for bathing and playing. The pool must be large enough to accommodate the hermit crab, but shallow enough to allow it to emerge easily and prevent drowning. Creating the ideal pool for your hermit crab is possible without spending a fortune on unnecessary equipment.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash a plastic jar lid or seashell with plain water and dry with a soft cloth. Avoid metal lids as hermit crabs are sensitive to their appearance and texture.

    • 2

Pour a one-eighth-inch layer of pebbles into the bottom of the lid or seashell. The small rocks give the hermit crab something to grasp to make moving in and out of the pool easier.

    • 3

Fill the plastic lid or seashell with dechlorinated water. Purchase dechlorinated water or a solution to remove the chlorine from your tap water at a pet store.

    • 4

Set the homemade pool into the hermit crab's enclosure. Replace the water and rinse off the pebbles and pool once a week, or as needed.
