How to Build a Water Puddle for Animals

Whether it's for drinking or cooling down, a puddle of water can be an important thing part of an animal's life. A puddle can be a simple thing to make as you can see by the sheer number of them that develop after rain storms. The key is to make a hole that will retain water. This can be helpful in areas where there is a lack of natural water for animals.

  • Plastic liner
  • Scissors
  • Fine gravel

      Measure or take into account the width and length of the animal you expect to use the puddle.

      Dig a hole 3 to 5 inches deep, and twice the width and length of the animal.

      Lay the plastic liner into the space.

      Cut around the edge of the plastic liner so it fits perfectly in the hole.

      Cover the liner with an inch of fine gravel so it won't get moved by the animal. Place a couple of large rocks around the sides to further secure the liner.

      Fill the puddle with water from a hose, or let it fill naturally with rain.
