How to Make Coroplast Into a Cage

Cube-and-coroplast cages, also known as "C and C" cages, make for inexpensive, roomy, durable, easily cleanable and safe cages for your guinea pig, rabbit or other small, non-climbing animal. Water, urine and other liquids can't penetrate the coroplast, which eases the cleaning process for the cage. Size is one of the most important factors when building a C-and-C cage; minimum size for one or two guinea pigs is 7 1/2 square feet, but bigger is always better. For rabbits, one or two rabbits should ideally have at least 24 square feet.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect your cube panels or grids together to form the outer perimeter of your cage using the included connectors. Sometimes the connectors are hard to attach; use pliers or a mallet to help connect them.

    • 2

Measure the inside of your cage from the connectors -- both length and width. The coroplast box you make will fit inside the cage.

    • 3

Set the coroplast on the floor or your work area.

    • 4

Place the cage on top of the coroplast.

    • 5

Measure 6 inches around the outside of the cage and mark on the coroplast.

    • 6

Cut the coroplast where you've marked it. Heavy-duty scissors or a sharp box cutter will work.

    • 7

Mark 6 inches from the edge of the coroplast all the way around.

    • 8

Score the coroplast -- don't cut all the way through -- with a box cutter. This may take some practice so use a spare piece of coroplast first.

    • 9

Cut the corner flaps of the scored coroplast. Don't cut out the entire corner, just one side of the "square" the scoring's made on your coroplast. These make the flaps that will hold the box together.

    • 10

Fold the edges of the coroplast in on the scored side. There may be a "snapping" noise.

    • 11

Fold the flaps around each corner and secure them with packing tape.

    • 12

Put your coroplast box inside the cube cage. Fill with your guinea pig or small animal's bedding and add their toys, water bottle and food dishes.
